The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a group of specialized lipids and their receptors, and associated enzymes, located in the mammalian brain and throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. The ECS is involved in a variety of physiological processes including appetite, pain management, mood and memory.

The ECS is known to modulate and influence a variety of physiological systems, including pain management, inflammation, mood balance, thermoregulation, muscle control, energy balance, metabolism, sleep quality, stress responses, motivation/reward, appetite, and memory.

The ECS also plays a role in mediating the psychoactive effects of marijuana use.
